The Color Orange

The significance of oranges was mentioned very early in the movie, when the Don was shot while he was buying oranges.

Most recently, I noticed that Carlo was wearing orange when he was recieving a beating from Sonny.

From these two events I can say that maybe oranges... or the color orange is a symbol of life threatening danger.

  2. Rushil, I give you a 10/10 for noticing something so small, which could impact the motif of the Godfather. I honestly did not notice that Carlo was wearing a orange suit right before Sonny beat Carlo in the street. I give you props.

  3. I agree with you man. The oranges come back at Don Vito Corleone's orange patch, in which later on the Don dies while playing with his grandson Antony. By the way, did Carlo wear an orange suit while Sonny was beating the living daylights out of him?

  4. Yes, Carlo was wearing orange.
    I agree with this post because it has been backed-up by many causes of events. The fruit 'orange' is a symbolism of death and pain. The movie even ends with an orange rolling out of the protagonist's hand.
    It seems like the color Orange (and the fruit) and the color red imlluminate a great importance in the film. It is interesting how red is even shown on the godfather to the side here, with the rose. Is this secretly foreshadowing? Probably.
    I found the meanings of these two colors;
    *Red- action, cofidence, courage, vitality, importance, power.
    *Orange (mixture of yellow and red)- vitaly with endurance, exploration of new things, curiosity.

    Overall, red has always stood out and symbolised power and importance. On the other hand, because of it's mixture of two different colors, orange has a presentation of being less intense and aggressive as red, because it is calmed by the cheerfulnes of yellow.

  5. In the God Father, color is used to symbolizes a lot more than just good versus evil. As you have mentioned, This becomes apparent in the use of orange. Orange tones represented by props, and reinforced with the lighting. Seem to represents an idea of caution, danger, or death. For this reason the entire movie is shot using orange tones. The color is present in almost every scene predicting a brutal and untimely death. Take for instance the tile on the walls of Sonnys house, the carpet of the casino in Las Vegas. The gold fish on the window where Sollozzo has Luca Brasi killed. The orange suit Carlos is wearing when Sonny avenges his sister. The sign in the window of the restaurant, When Michael kills Sollozzo and the Police Chief, it emits an orange tent that makes the entire restaurant glow. Similar to the restaurant, is the shade of orange in the hospital room where Vito was left alone. There is also the orange suite case being placed in the trunk before Connie's husband Carlos gets strangled in the car. And last but not least all of the orange in the baptism and massacre scene: the stripes on the priest, the shorts of the man giving Moe Green a massage, the orange shirt of the gunman in the lobby, and the lady in orange on the steps.
    If Orange props and orange color tones were not enough for Coppola, it seems that death is for shadowed by the presence of oranges. Tessio is peeling an orange in the wedding scene. Oranges are on the table setting in Hollywood producer Jack Woltz's dining room. Vito is shopping for oranges just prior to the assassination attempt on his life. It’s important to note that Vito never touches the oranges. That’s why he doesn’t die. He points at them and the sales man puts them in a bag. To continue on, an Orange’s fruit basket is on the table next to Vito in the scan When Fredo goes to visit his dad at his bed side. While Michael is in Sicily, he meets a woman named Appolonia, which means orange. Also, the first time he sees her he is under an orange tree. This, of course, is for shadowing her death. During the meeting with Vito and the five families’ oranges are strategically placed at both ends of the table. It is also interesting to note that the oranges only appear in shots either with Barzini or Philip tattaglia. Both of which, are conspiring to assassinate Michael. Sonny drives past a billboard promoting Florida Oranges just before he is gunned down at the turnpike tollbooth. Vito dies with an orange in his mouth, and Michael dies with an orange in his hand.
